BRAVE THE WORLD'S LARGEST WEEKEND MARKET

BANGKOK

  • Bargain for a range of curiosities
  • People watch, snack, and shop through 27 acres of wares

Put on your game face and get ready for market day. Chatuchak Weekend Market, or JJ to locals, has over 15,000 booths stretching over 27 acres. Pick up everything from ceramic dolls and comic books to antique teapots and live kittens. Bring a backpack or a canvas tote bags and head out first thing in the morning ahead of the heat. Stick to the outer rings—the best stuff can be found in the farther reaches. Drink plenty of water, or lemonade, particularly from the stand in front of Section 1, Soi 36— a refreshing offset to the spicy som tam green papaya salad at neighboring Foon Ta Lob. Make Viva 8 your home base—they make a mean iced latte and have stools set in the shade when you need a break. Hunt for antiques, spin through racks of clothes, or admire walls stacked high with china plates. Looking for a deal? Some stalls have signs indicating fixed price, but if not, start your bargaining at half of what’s on the label. On Sunday afternoons, look for the mini-party with drinks, tunes, and huge pan of paella in front of the market.

Take the SkyTrain to Mo Chit to see the city from above. On the return trip, use the Kamphaenpetch MRT underground station located in the park—it’s usually less crowded—and take it to Lumphini.
